Album Info: The SRT has 5 preserved steam locomotives and regularly operates them for various special events, usually in every quarter. Most often run are the 824 and 850, both Japanese built Pacific types made right after WW2. They also have 1 operational Mikado type, No. 953 which operates less often and 2 others which seem to be rarely ever run. The special runs are usually day long events running to Bangkok's outlying areas and back and include generous evening photo layovers at Hua Lamphong Station. Round trip tickets are amazingly cheap (< $10) and often sell out to the admiring public! Every year on Dec. 5th SRT runs the 'King's Birthday Special Service' in honour of HRH King Rama 9 -I think this year marks his 88th! The Miss and I had the privalege of participating in this year's events and present these photos...

SRT 824
Title:  SRT 824
Description:  December 5th. is the King of Thailand's birthday, and every year the SRT will run its special service in observation. Here the 824 is all decked out for the occasion and taking a breather at Makkasan before rolling on to the next stop. Barely visible behind 824 is another preserved steamer making this a double header. Thai practice seems to be to put double headers back to back which is handy for bi directional operations. This is a Pacific type engine built in Japan after WW2, 1949, I think!

King Rama 9 Royal Train

The rooster is a major part of thai symbology and culture and figurines very similar to these can be seen all around Thailand. Each car of the Royal trainset has 4 Garuda recess mounted onto the sides as seen here. They are made of brass, as of course, if made of real gold, they will not be there for long...
