Album Info:This is an album for one of the world best operated rail systems, Japan Rail. For a very long time the JR system was a government entity until in 1987 when it was privatized into 7 operating rail systems and 2 non operating companies. At the time JR operations were divided into 6 regional passenger systems and 1 common carrier to handle all freight operations nationwide. All of the JR 'group' companies still retain the same, modern stylized 'JR Speed' logo, and differentiate themselves by each company's logo being of a different color. In addition, JRF equiptment almost always has the white, block-letter 'Starburst' logo to differentiate themselves from the passenger networks. Japan's standard gauge is our 3'6" narrow gauge, while interestingly the bullet train network adheres to the common world standard gauge. JR Freight operates with a majority pure electric mainline locomotive fleet, and for such an modern and efficient system has a surprisingly large amount of old [40+ yrs] locomotives in daily use -credit that to excellent maintenance!! Newer models operate alongside the older types and are slowly supplanting the veterans, however..Diesel power rules for branchlines and industrial + yard work. Long a staple of the diesel fleet, JR's 'DE 10/15' class may be in its twilight as a new Hybrid Genset model, the 'HD300' [Toshiba] is now coming into service around the JRF system. Freights run quite frequently and tend to be short, mostly either unit container sets or unit 'whalebelly' tanker sets full of gasoline. There are a great many fascinating aspects of the JR's operations, I hope this album will convey that to the reader..Enjoy! -MP

OM1SSOMY
Title:  OM1SSOMY
Description:  This is the busy little shop switcher at Omiya Car shops hard at work. Here she is pushing an 'Express 185' EMU set into the shop building. Omiya {Grand (As in Big) Palace} is a major station and shop complex just outside of Tokyo in neighboring Saitama Prefecture. In addition to the shops and station, there is an excellent Railroad musiem very close by, I think it occupies a dormant portion of the shop property there.

JR DE101565MSJ
Title:  JR DE101565MSJ
Description:  On a 2009 trip to Japan, I caught this DE10 #1565 switching at Minami Senju. The DE 10 class are 65 ton diesel-hydraulic switchers with an unusual wheel arraingement of 'A-A-A B'. The DE 10 has 1,350 hp, this example was built approximately 1969 by Nippon -Sharyo.. They are ubiqutous across Japan but that may be an end of an era now, as a new type of Hybrid diesel is coming into service.

Title:  HDR 300#4, MSJ
Description:  The future of JR switcher power is represented here. This is a Toshiba HDR300 diesel genset switcher very early on in the series; the number 4. Aside from being boxy they are very similar to the DE 10 family they will replace. They have B B trucks and a 671 hp. engine powering its Lithium Ion batterys when charge gets low. Here the No. 4 works Minami Senju.

Title:  HDR 300#4MSJs2
Description:  No. 4 pushing a string of JRF containers back to be unloaded, Minami Senju. Once in place, the flats will be quicky divested of thier containers with big forklifts. The HDR 300 operates very quietly and runs about most of the time in battery-electric mode. During my 45 minutes watch, I noticed its engine only running once. In preliminary tests done by JR the HD300 showed significant savings in fuel, noise and emissions over the DE series. -Seems like the Brakeman needs a place to sit a few...!

Title:  JR taki1000418, FHM
Description:  If it ain't containers, it'll be tankers...Unit tank car trains vie with container trains as the most likely to be seen in the Tokyo area. Acting on a tip from a quick web search, I rode out to Fuchu Hon-Machi station {'Mid State' (Prefecture) Old-Town} looking for some freight to photograph and what sight greets me as i get off the train?!!! -This splendid tanker train of gas cans waiting for the clear...This shiny example is a 'taki' class whalebelly tanker. ENEOS is one of Japan's major gas station chains.

JR EF8180OMY
Title:  JR EF8180OMY
Description:  A treat to see, this EF 81 class loco pulls a Overnight 'Blue Train' through Omiya Station. The shooting star on #80's flank indicates she was in 'Hokutosei' [Northern Star Express] service before being supplanted by a newer EH 500 type. Therefore it is appropiate that she heads up this blue train set. The EF 81 class is a further evolution of the EF64 and 65 series, notably without a nose door. They were built between 1968 and 79 by Hitachi and Mitsubishi. Thier main feature is dual volt capability, operating both at 1,500VDC or 20KVAC. They produce the same 3,420hp as the EF64-5 on DC and slightly less [3,180hp.] on AC. Soundwise, they are akin to an 'engineless' SD unit's Dynamic brakes in action.

Description:  End coach of an empty Blue Train being pulled through Omiya station by EF81 #80. Blue Trains are overnight/long distance service-sets. It seems however, that Blue Train service may be coming to an end, as air travel and expanding Shinkansen service have mortally wounded the efficiency/profitability of this service.

JR EF64#37'Chocolate' OMY
Title:  JR EF64#37'Chocolate' OMY
Description:  This was the highlight of my 3 days watching JR trains...This EF 64, #37, is an early production version built between 1965 and {likely} 1970. This loco was painted brown in 2003 to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the opening of JR's Chuo Mainline [Central Main] between Kofu and Enzan. It is now part of the 'preserved' fleet and used for charter and engineering runs. In this photo I have lightened the brown some in order to bring out the details on the cab end.

As a light move, she came into track 6 in a dignified manner and pulled up to the far end of the platform for a personnel change [or signal?] and then quickly went on.
